Water Hemlock (CicutaMaculata)
Water Hemlock is the most toxic plant in North America and is closely related to poisonous hemlock, also known as the plant which killed Socrates. The plant is characterized by a big wildflower and it is frequently confused for celery or parsnips. Every part of the plant is toxic and causes abdominal cramps, convulsions, nausea and can even be fatal! People who have survived it have suffered from long-lasting tremors as well as amnesia.
Deadly Nightshade (Atropa Belladonna)
According to a legend, Macbeth’s soldiers used nightshade wine to kill their Danish enemies. The nice berries of the plant attract people who mistake them for cherries, ingesting scopolamine and atropine, substances that paralyze their muscles including the heart! Physical contact with the plant causes skin irritation.
White Snakeroot (AgeratinaAltissima)
This plants became recognizable after killing Abraham Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks. The deadly white snakeroot is native to North America and contains trematol, a toxic alcohol which can be passed to people by animal products. The symptoms of trematol poisoning include appetite loss, nausea, abdominal discomfort, acidic blood and can also be fatal. Due to the highly poisonous substance, white snakeroot is being removed from animal pastures.
Castor Bean (RicinusCommunis)
Castor bean is an ornamental African plant which seeds contain a poison called ricin. Castor oil is obtainable from the plant when its seeds are processed. Just one or two natural castor seeds bean can kill a child, while eight will surely kill a grown man – that’s how poisonous castor bean is! When ingested, it inhibits the synthesis of proteins inside cells and causes symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, seizures and even death in some cases.
Rosary Pea (AbrusPrecatorius)
The so-called jequirity seeds contain a protein called abrin which inhibits ribosomes. The rosary peas can be found in tropical lands and are commonly used in prayer rosaries and jewelry. The undamaged seeds are not hazardous, but if they are broken or scratched they can be deadly upon contact – about 3 mg. of them should be enough to kill a grown man. Like ricin, abrin also inhibits protein synthesis in cells.
Oleander (Nerium Oleander)
Oleander is a wonderful plant with nice flowers which makes people assume it’s safe. However, oleander contains cardiac glycosides called oleandrin and neriline which cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, coma and can even be fatal if consumed! The plant is so poisonous that there are reported cases of people becoming sick after eating honey from bees that visited oleander flowers!
Tobacco (NicotianaTabacum)
Yes, that tobacco. Tobacco is the most commercial plant in the world – it is used to produce cigars and cigarettes, and its leaves can also be chewed. However, all of tobacco’s parts, including the leaves, contain nicotine and abanasine, toxic alkaloids which are fatal when ingested. But, even besides the fact that it’s a well-known cardiac poison, nicotine is consumed by a lot of people, which is why tobacco is one of the most dangerous plants on the planet, killing over 5 million people a year.
Angel’s Trumpet
The dangerous angel’s trumpet is a mind altering plant from South America which has recently been gaining attention after a 2007 documentary called “Colombian Devil’s Breath” described how criminal gangs from Colombia used refined scopolamine from the plant to turn victims into living zombies. The plant contains atropine, hyosyamine and scopolamine, substances that make the victims unaware of their actions, but conscious at the same time. Consuming the plant causes a psychotic state in the victims.
Spurge Laurel
Spurge Laurel, also known as the Bay Leaf, can be found in ornamental gardens and public grounds. It contains biocides which cause irritation and blistering if you come in contact with a cut plant. Consuming the berries causes internal bleeding and organ failure, often resulting in death. Some tribes have been using Spurge Laurel as a drug for terminally ill patients.
Death Camas
The Camas is an edible bulb found in the west-northern areas of America. However, another plant called Toxicoscordionvenenosum is very similar to the Camas bulbs although with different colors.This dangerous plant can cause blood disturbance and organ failure, and it can also be fatal!
