Are you suffering from eczema? Have you been diagnosed with a skin condition that has itchiness as the main symptom? If you have provided an affirmative answer to either one of these questions, you have arrived at the right place.

In the paragraphs that follow, you will discover how you can prepare calamine lotion with apple cider, in the comfort of your home. This natural remedy will soothe your itchy skin, being more effective and certainly cheaper than the store-bought version.

What is Calamine Lotion?

Calamine lotion is a topical product which can be used for a wide range of skin conditions. Unfortunately, the store-bought version is filled with harmful chemicals, such as iron oxide, zinc oxide, and zinc carbonate. Such products also contain fragrances, alcohol, and parabens, presenting a high risk of allergies.

The DIY calamine lotion, on the other hand, contains only natural ingredients, so there are no risks of allergies. And, as you will have the opportunity to read the next paragraph, it can be used for various skin problems. With this lotion, you will no longer have to ask yourself how to get rid of acne.

Benefits of The DIY Calamine Lotion

The DIY calamine lotion has a soothing effect on the skin, working on common symptoms such as itchiness, redness, and inflammation. It is recommended for a wide range of skin conditions, including eczema, sunburn and poison ivy rash. Given its soothing effect on the skin, it can also be used to soothe the skin after insect bites, having an anti-inflammatory effect at the same time.

It can be taken on outdoor trips and used as a lifesaver in case the skin comes in contact with potentially irritating plants or insects. Last, but not least, you can use it to soothe the skin in case of chickenpox.

Ingredient Benefits

Bentonite clay is one of the main ingredients, being well-known for its skin healing properties and ability to soothe the skin, in the situation, there is direct contact with poison ivy.

Baking soda is known for being able to modify the balance of the skin, acting wonders on inflammation, itchiness, and irritation.

The lavender essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties, being able to soothe itchy or inflamed skin.

Sea salt acts as a highly efficient exfoliator, relieving inflammation and itchiness at the same time.

Pink kaolin clay can be used to add a beautiful color to the DIY lotion, acting as a gentle exfoliator as well.

As for glycerin, this is especially recommended for those with dry skin, as it can prevent moisture loss and keep the skin hydrated all at once.

DIY Calamine Lotion

Serves: 1/2 Lotion

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon Bentonite clay
  • 1 tablespoon Sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon Baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon Organic apple cider vinegar

Directions

Note: To prepare the DIY calamine lotion, it is recommended that you avoid using metal objects. Choose utensils that are made from other materials than metal; avoid using metal bowls or storage cans. This is extremely important because a reaction can occur between the metal and the ingredients of the DIY lotion, thus reducing the overall level of efficiency.

  1. Take a large bowl and combine the following ingredients: apple cider vinegar, sea salt, baking soda and bentonite clay.
  2. Add water and mix everything together, until you obtain a paste.
  3. Once you have obtained this paste, it is recommended to add the lavender essential oil.
  4. Mix thoroughly, to incorporate the lavender essential oil into the mixture.

When done, it is advisable that you store the DIY calamine lotion in a glass jar with lid (not metal).

Application

The DIY calamine lotion can be applied to the skin, using the fingers, in a thin or more generous layer (depending on the skin condition one is suffering from). It can be applied as often as it is necessary, as there are no side-effects or allergic reactions to worry about. It can be stored in the fridge and used for several weeks.

Final words

When you suffer from itchiness, inflammation or redness, you can use the DIY calamine lotion with confidence. Keep in mind that this natural product can also be used to keep your skin smooth and supple, as the glycerin prevents moisture loss.
