The 10 Best Natural Home Remedies to Get Rid Eye Bags
Every morning when you wake up and stand in front of the mirror, the first thing you always notice on your face is how big your eye bags are. This gets you instantly frustrated, especially when you know you’ve slept well the previous night. The skin around the eyes is very soft and sensitive and contains many small blood vessels.
Eye bags appear due to excess fluids trapped in the skin. There are many things that contribute to this puffiness appearing under your eyes. Some of the main reasons are aging, stress, lack of sleep, high caffeine consumption, fat deposits, and respiratory problems. However frustrating this might be, don’t worry.
There are some effective home remedies you can use to treat baggy or puffy eyes. Modern medicine has also come out with some ways to do this, but these home remedies are much cheaper, and you can use them in your home whenever you want. Here are some of them.
1. Chilled Tea Bags
If you don’t want people noticing that you have large eye bags, applying used, filtered tea bags on and under your eyes is one of your best options. You can save up some used filtered tea bags and store them in your fridge. Whenever you have the time and feel like doing it, lie down or just lean on a chair and place the tea bags on your eyes. Leave them for around 20–30 minutes.
After you’ve done this, make sure to wash your eyes with cold water. This will result in refreshed eyes, as the caffeine in the tea constricts the blood vessels, reducing inflammation and redness and minimizing the dark circles.
2. Cucumbers
Cucumbers are also another effective natural remedy for treating eye bags. The nutrients in the cucumber and its coolness have a soothing, refreshing, and anti-inflammatory effect on your eyes, reducing the inflammation of the skin. Simply lie down, place a slice of cucumber on each eye, and leave them on for around 10–25 minutes.
3. Aloe Vera
This plant has been used as an herbal medicine since ancient times by people like the Egyptians. You can use the gel or “crystals” squeezed out from a fresh leaf of aloe vera to gently massage the bags under your eyes.
4. Potato
Just like cucumber, potatoes also have anti-inflammatory properties. Potatoes cause a decrease in water retention under the skin and help in reducing inflammation in the area around your eyes. Just as with cucumbers, place on each eye a chilled slice of potato big enough to cover the puffy areas around your eyes. Remove them after some 20 minutes or so. This will result in some reduction in the puffiness around your eyes.
5. Milk
Milk is also one of the best options to fight puffy eyes. It has the same soothing and cooling effect on your tired eyes as potatoes. It also decreases water retention in the tissues inside the skin. To apply some milk around your eyes, dip two cotton pads in chilled milk and place them on your eyes, leaving them the therefore some 20–30 minutes. After you’ve done this, wash your eyes with cold water. If this problem constantly bothers you, do this for several days.
6. Almond Oil
Not only does it reduce puffiness and dark circles around your eyes, but almond oil also contains many vitamins that nourish and moisturize the skin. Place two or three drops of almond oil on your ring finger and gently massage the area under your eyes before going to bed. This also helps with water retention in the tissues and improves blood circulation throughout the vessels.
7. Vitamin E Oil
Vitamin E is essential for healthy skin. Prepare a well-mixed solution of some chilled water in a bowl with several drops of vitamin E oil. Dip the cotton pads in this solution and leave them on your eyes for some 20 minutes or so. This will reduce the swelling under your eyes.
8. Egg White
Egg whites are also helpful with decreasing water retention and reducing inflammation, not only under your eyes but also throughout your whole body. You can apply some well-beaten, stiffened egg white under your eyes with some soft cloth or a make-up brush. Leave it to do its thing for about 20 minutes, and then wash your face with cold water. This will decrease puffiness and tighten the area.
9. Chilled Spoons
To reduce the puffiness under your eyes and constrict the blood vessels, you can even just use two pairs of spoons chilled in water. Dip the spoons in water so they are cold and place the first two over your eyes, leaving them there for some time. After you’ve chilled the second two, take off the first and do the same with the second.
10. Cold splash
If you don’t feel like using any of the above methods for treating puffy eyes, this is the simplest one for you. Washing your face more often and splashing cold water on the skin under your eyes will decrease fluid retention in it and improve fluid circulation.
There are some other things you can do to treat baggy eyes or even prevent them from appearing. The most important things, not only for your eyes but for your whole body, are to minimize drinking, smoking, excessive caffeine, sodium, and omega 6 fatty acid consumption.
Instead, you should drink plenty of water on a daily basis, exercises to improve blood circulation, and most importantly, don’t stay up late at night, and PLEASE TRY to get those optimal 6–8 hours of sleep.
