Is It Safe to Crack Your Knuckles?

Do you often crack your knuckles? Sometimes cracking knuckles could mean a fight is about to start. Many people do it due to soreness and stiffness. Some just do it as a habit. However, some people say that excessive knuckle cracking causes them to become bigger while others speculate that it leads to arthritis.

Is it true that cracking your knuckles can lead to arthritis or negatively affect your health? According to science, the joints have a liquid called synovial fluid that appears like egg yolk. This fluid reduces friction in joints every time there is movement. The fluid has gases such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen.

When cracking your knuckles, you stretch the space in your joints and as it expands, negative pressure is created. This causes bubbles to form and collapse making a popping sound.

The safety of cracking knuckles is a mystery since no medical study has suggested otherwise. However, just like anything else, do it in moderation. One study found that cracking your knuckles frequently for a long period of time may cause your hands to swell and even reduce your grip strength. This is a 1990 study and no other has been conducted since then.
